Self-host YouTube Placeholder

When you enable "Use Placeholder Images for YouTube iFrames", iFrames will be replaced with the thumbnail image of the YouTube video.

However, this image is loaded from the external domain i.ytimg.com.

This can create:

  • Extra DNS lookups and SSL handshakes
  • Unable to leverage browser cache for image
  • Unable to use existing CDN

By self-hosting the YouTube placeholder, the image will be downloaded and cached by FlyingPress. So placeholder images will be served from your own domain and CDN (if you have).
